Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS)
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a way to create a positive school culture and individualized behavior supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students.
At our Alternative Education Academies, we expect our students to show Achievement, Leadership and Teamwork. All students will follow the same set of expectations throughout all areas in the building. The expectations are posted throughout the building for easy access. When students follow the expectations, they are recognized with a PBIS card. If they do not follow the expectations, there are planned interventions to help get them back on track.
When a staff member sees a student demonstrating one of the expectations, the student receives a PBIS card. Students can then use their PBIS cards to win prizes, snacks, extra breaks and other incentives.
The PBIS program is widely used nationwide as well as throughout the Tolleson Union High School District. Researchers have extensively studied PBIS, and the results show a decrease in classroom disruptions, a decrease in discipline referral, suspensions and even expulsions and improved academic achievement and school Climate.
At CEA and Lighthouse Academy, we have seen some of these same effects and more student participation.
